Revitalizing Downtown

The Downtown Danville Partnership was formed in September, 2007 following the town study performed by Hyett-Palma in the summer of 2007. The group is comprised of various town officials and leaders who work together in effort to revitalize our historic downtown area.

To view a copy of the Action Agenda the Partnership follows, please click here.

If you'd like to speak to the Partnership at one of our monthly meetings, please click here for the Partnership Meeting Guidelines.

If you are a business or building owner in the downtown district looking to make improvements to the exterior of your building or store, you may be excited to learn that Facade Grant Program brochures are now available and may be found at Town Hall and the Chamber office.

Facts and Demographics

  • Danville, Hendricks County's seat, is the oldest town in the county. The town was officially organized on April Fools Day, April 1, 1824.

  • The town was named after Daniel Wick, brother of Judge William Wick, who was conducting court in the county at the time.

  • The first courthouse was constructed of peeled logs at a cost of $147. The fourth and current courthouse was completed in 1914.
Its 1976 replacement value was set between $6 and $8 million.

  • In 1878 Danville "stole" Central Normal College from Ladoga when local citizens converged with a caravan of wagons to "move" the school to Danville. Central Normal College was known as one of the leading teacher training schools in the nation. When it closed in the summer of 1946, it was the only remaining self-supporting private normal schools in the Midwest.

  • After closing as Central Normal College, it was reopened as Canterbury College. Canterbury was closed in 1951. Today, two of the former college buildings are used as part of the Danville Middle School.
